How do I get a publisher? |
| It is relatively easy to get a book published...you can do it yourself with one of the many self-publishing companies fairly accessible on the internet. You do, however, need to be concerned about the cost to you. Costs of self publishing can run from Zero dollars to thousands and thousands of output before you have even received the first copy of your book in your hands. What about Editing? Do I have to have an editor? |

ALL authors should have a trusted editor to review your manuscript before it is submitted to the publisher, regardless of who intends to do the printing and publishing.
Editing costs vary from a flat fee for "x" amount of pages, to fees per page. Be sure to ask what the editing service provides....will they simply correct spelling and grammar OR are they going to make suggestions for a better way to write the sentence, arrangement of the content of the book and other services. Costs vary widely as do the skills of the provider. |

How many copies of the book will I be required to purchase each run?
Some publishers require that you purchase a minimum number of copies each run, or each printing of the book. This can vary from 100 to 10,000. Many times your cost per copy is based upon how many copies you purchase each order. Other companies can offer you from 1 to an unlimited number of books at the same price and you can order as often or as little as you like. Be sure to ask what the requirements are before committing to purchasing. |

What is involved in designing a cover?
You can design your own cover or pay someone to design it for you. Costs from an illustrator/artist may run as little as $100 per cover or upwards to thousands of dollars per cover. Costs may be dependent upon color or black/white and upon content or may be a flat rate. Often the artists will also charge additional costs if you want anything changed or altered once they present you with the design. Ask how many revisions you can make at one price. |
What about design software?
Yes, you can use software to assist you in desiging your cover. Be sure you cover meets all the specifications of the publishing company both in size, dimensions and dpi. All photos and artwork should be at least 300 dpi in order to print clearly. Otherwise you may end up with a fuzzy cover. |
Will the publisher provide cover design services?
Most publishers offer cover design services and some will assist you for minimal costs. | | |
